This house garland can be painted in endless ways. Here I used some white crayon resist, watercolor, and a splash of gold tempera paint. Set this out for a group of children and let them explore the resist technique used when mixing crayon and watercolor. You could make these in a classroom, or at home with your family.

Supply List for Watercolor House Garland:
~ Butcher paper or newspaper for the table
~ Watercolor paper (I cut mine down to 5.5″ X 3.75″)
~ Painter’s masking tape (less sticky than regular masking tape)
~ Crayons or oil pastels
~ Liquid watercolor and small jars with lids
~ Brushes
~ Metallic tempera paint (optional)
~ Ribbon (I used velvet ribbon)
Directions for making Watercolor House Garland:
1. Use the tape to create house shapes on the watercolor paper. Next time I will leave a space at the top and not have the roof go to the edge.
2. If you are doing this for yourself, tape all the houses close to each other on the table so that it feels like you are painting one big painting. If you are setting this out for a group, tape one or two to each place.
3. Spend a little time drawing with the crayons first. I used a white crayon and made some marks, which were invisible to my eye and fun to see pop up when the watercolor went on top.
4. Set our your liquid watercolors and put a brush in each jar. (I mixed some colors and added a little water, but you don’t have to do this step. I just like my colors to be a little muted.) Paint in any way you choose.
5. When you’ve finished using the watercolor, you can add some metallic spatter paint on top if you choose. I splattered a little gold tempera paint on top.
6. Let dry, then slowly peel off the tape.
7. Punch holes and thread the ribbon through.
8. Hang up somewhere!
As you can see from the art room in the background, I’m definitely a garland person 😉
