    Cardboard Faces

Sometimes it takes me a while to write about a project, especially since this whole pandemic! I’ve been focusing on our Learning Guides and have neglected writing new posts. But today I am pulling myself together and writing about these cardboard faces we made last Spring in our weeklong Recycled Materials Camp! I was so excited to save these corrugated cardboard pieces because I just love the textural quality it gives artwork. The kids loved it, too! It became a very sensory experience because they loved the feeling of running their fingers in the painty crevices.

The supply list is simple using things you have at home, and the prep is not that long. I love making up art projects by simply looking through my collected recyclables. It gives me so much satisfaction to not buy anything new and to use what we have!

    Supplies needed for Cardboard Faces:

~ Cardboard face shapes (you don’t have to use corrugated, but if you do have it then you can tear the shapes instead of cut)

~ Cardboard surface (I covered mine with some newspaper, keeping a small border, but this is not necessary)

    ~ Smaller cardboard pieces

~ Tubes cut up into small circles

~ Small recycled items like buttons, corks, and bottle tops

    ~ Scissors

    ~ White glue

    ~ Tempera paints

~ Paint brushes (I put one in each color so kids don’t have to rinse their brush)

    How to make Cardboard Faces:

    1. Cut the cardboard bases. Glue newspaper on if you want. I liked the contrast and added textural feeling. But it’s not vital if you don’t have any newspaper or don’t have time. (Actually, I used phone book pages!)

    2. Cut the face shapes and glue those onto the base (or the kids can do this).

    3. Cut lots of smaller, different sized pieces of cardboard.

    4. Set out the base, box of cut-up cardboard pieces, and basket of small recycled items, along with glue and scissors.

    5. Let your child create their face using anything they want. They can cut their own pieces with the scissors, or use what’s in the box.

    6. After all the gluing is done, bring out the paints! No need to wait for the glue to dry, it’s ok if the paint mixes with the glue.

I love the way these turned out! Each face has it’s own personality.
