In the last art camp I held in my house, before the pandemic shut everything down, I had the kids paint a bunch of cereal box cardboard. I set it out with some paint jars and expired gifts cards and had them scrape the paint all around. After it was dry, we used that cardboard to make these adorable animals. Fast forward to the following Easter when I needed a quickie decoration, I took the cardboard back out and made this charming egg garland which took no time at all.

Materials needed for cardboard egg garland:

    ~ Cereal box cardboard

~ Tempera paints (mixed with white to make them opaque)

~ Expired gift cards or scraps of thicker cardboard

    ~ Scissors

    ~ Masking tape

    ~ Hole punch (small 1/8″)

    ~ String or yarn

How to make cardboard egg garland:

    1. Start by painting the cardboard. We used the scrape painting technique because it’s fun and fast and deposits a fairly even and thin layer so that it dries quickly. It also leaves some of the brown cardboard showing through which I think gives it a nice, weathered look.

We stuck with one color per piece of cardboard, but you could do anything you want!

    2. When the cardboard is dry, cut an egg shape from a scrap piece of paper and then trace the shape with a pencil onto several of the colored cardboard. Cut out the eggs and then cut them in half.

    3. Play around with the half-eggs until you find a color scheme that you like. Then tape them together in the back with a piece of masking tape.

    4. Add some dots and marks with white tempera paint to give it a little interest and texture. Punch two holes at the top and to string through the yarn. Hang and enjoy!
